This body of work comprises a series of paintings in which superheroes, and particularly the Hulk, play a central role in my creative process. Maria Fragoudaki was originally drawn to the Hulk because of his constant struggle to control his strength. There is a human aspect in this struggle that evokes empathy for the Hulk, which she tries to express through his presence in her paintings.
She believes it is this human element –the fragility behind immense strength– that makes many people relate to aspects of the Hulk. She is drawn to this explosive, passionate expression of emotion from an otherwise quiet, sensitive, and reserved person.
When those feelings –particularly anger– become too strong to contain, a transformation occurs.
